Lists for Africa

Must bring items

1) Cable ties
2) Bicycle tube – can be used to tie things down, as a seal for jerry cans, or to fix just about anything.
3) Epoxy glue
4) Tie-down-straps – always bring more than you think you need. They break or you will need to tie something down that has broken.
5) Ziplock plastic bags
6) Pegs
7) Universal sink plug
8) Candles – lubricates zips and combined with a plastic water bottle half filled with sand and with the top cut off makes a romantic night light.
9) Spare shocks!!!
10) Long range fuel tanks – we have needed a range of over 1000km several times. You never know when there will be a fuel shortage.
11) A variety of screws, bolts and nuts
12) Small sowing kit

Handy Hints
1)    Put a thin sock or stocking over the snorkel to keep dust out of the air filter. Remember to take it off when it rains or else you will have no air flow (we learnt the hard way).
2)    Cable ties, glue and bicycle tube fix everything.
3)    Anti smash film applied to our windows in Cape Town saved our lives in Kenya.
4)    Don’t pay a bribe, you can always talk your way out of it if you stay calm.
5)    GPS is very handy. In Africa Garmin Africa Tracks is much better than Magellan.
6)    A large sealable plastic container is great as a washing machine. Put in clothes, detergent and water, seal lid, drive for a while on corrugated roads and your washing is done when you get to your campsite. All you need to do is rinse and hang. Much easier than hand washing.
